Drive to Rotorua

Unfortunately, due to rough weather conditions, our ferry to Kapiti Island was cancelled. Not surprising considering the conditions on our ferry ride across the Cook Straight yesterday. So Plan B was to drive all the way from Wellington to Rotorua, another >500 kms. We saw the farmlands around Palmerston North (lots of cows & sheep & pastureland), the three mountain peaks characteristic of Tongariro National Park (Mount Doom), the big calm clear crater lake of Lake Taupo with black swans and the rolling hills between Taupo and Rotorua (LOTR fans think Hobbiton, we drove near the filming location). Having arrived in Rotorua we are now floating in the hotels thermal pool and trying to decide how to fit all sorts of fun activities (and a drive to Auckland) in our last 2 days in NZ!

A note on sandflies: they are vicious, horrible, nasty, evil, blood-sucking, skin-piercing, flesh-eating monsters! The bites itch like (insert a very nasty word)!
